The Genesis Horticulture Project is a program run by Equilibrium Youth Work Community Interest Company (EQ), which helps at-risk young people experience success while they develop job and life skills through the growing, harvesting and marketing of cut flowers and vegetable crops. Programs include hands on practical work in horticulture, cooking and nutrition, business and marketing skills.
As a team the young people will grow cut flowers and vegetables which they sell at farmers' markets or provide them for donation to local hospitals and care homes. Participants also engage in workshops aimed at teaching them a variety of social and employability skills in addition to agricultural concepts. All programs take place at the Equilibriums 9 acre site near Henstridge.
The Eq Genesis Project originated from the need to provide positive alternative activities for young people who are excluded, at risk of exclusion, or who have left fulltime education and are now ‘not in education, employment or training’ (NEET).
The project provides an alternative to classroom based learning, encouraging young people to gain horticultural skills through site based work. Liaising closely with a variety of learning providers, the project ensures that the young people develop important social and emotional skills as well as valuable employability skills. Eq has been running successfully for ten years, helping young people from across Dorset, Bournemouth, Poole and South Somerset, to gain skills, develop as individuals and successfully move on into a variety of careers or further training opportunities.
Programmes offer off site based training, leading to a variety of National Vocational Qualifications and Youth Awards Scheme Qualifications.
